
President Joko Widodo is due to meet with entrepreneurs and taxpayers in Bandung, West Java, on Monday, to discuss the government’s tax amnesty programs. The visit to Bandung is a part of the President’s talks and meetings with prominent businesspersons across the country to persuade them to take part in the program, the official said. The President has also visited Singapore to talk with tax evaders in the neighboring country. A number of ministers and top level government officials are accompanying the President to convince businesspersons to repatriate their assets as early as possible in order to make the most of the benefits available to them. Repatriated assets will enjoy a redemption rate ranging from 2 to 5 percent of the assets, while declared assets will have a 4 to 10 percent rate.
Indonesia to establish international university of Islam
Indonesia will establish an international university of Islam. It was said by Vice President M Jusuf Kalla in his opening remarks at the 24th National Congress of Rabithah Alawiyah, a social organization, in Jakarta over the weekend. The Vice President said, as the world largest Muslim majority country, Indonesia needs an international-class Islamic higher education institution. The planned state-owned university will be managed by relevant ministries, such as the education ministry, the religious affairs ministry, and the foreign affairs ministry. The university will have Magistrate and Doctorate programs in Islamic study, social and humanitarian studies, sciences and technology. The university will be built using funds from the State Budget (APBN) and non-APBN funds, and the project will move ahead in line with the existing laws on state higher education. In his address, Kalla also mentioned that Indonesian Muslims still face problems, such as when it comes to capability to do business or master sciences and technology. Therefore, he called on the ulemas and habaib to help improve the Muslims knowledge of and capacity to do business.
Government confirms one more Indonesian abducted in Malaysian water
Director of Citizen and Legal Entities Protection of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Lalu Muhammad Iqbal has confirmed that several gunmen have abducted an Indonesian captain of a fishing trawler in the Malaysian water. Iqbal explained that the fishing trawler was attacked by the gunmen on August 3, at around 4 p.m. local time. There were two other crew members on board when the incident occurred, but the gunmen released them, and they reported the incident to police in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, on August 5. Following the report to the police, Iqbal said the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and consulate general in Kota Kinabalu worked closely with the local authorities, the freed crewmen, shipping company, and the Philippine authority, to seek more detailed information. At present, the two crewmen and the trawler are being held for investigations. Previously, ten Indonesians were kidnapped by armed group members and until now they are still being taken hostage in the southern Philippines.
Tax Offices to Open on Saturdays Too
In a bid to provide more opportunities for tax payers to pay taxes under the Tax Amnesty scheme, Directorate General of Taxes opens all tax offices in Indonesia until Saturday. Director of Socialization, Services and Public Relations of the Tax Directorate Hestu Yoga Saksama said that with the opening of tax offices on Saturdays is expected to give better services to all tax payers. Hestu added that this measure is taken because the period of the tax amnesty program is very short, that is only nine months. He went on to say that tax offices are open on Saturdays from 8 am until 2 pm local time, while during working days, from Monday to Friday, the offices are open as usual from 8 am until 4 pm. In the past one week, it is reported that at least 1,000 tax statement letters have been submitted to tax offices. Hesty hopes that with more time provided including on Saturdays, the people’s enthusiasm to participate in this program can be accommodated.
