Tax Amnesty Raises Forex Reserves to US$6 B, Jokowi Says

TEMPO.COJakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo claimed that the tax amnesty law has managed to raise the foreign exchange reserves. According to Jokowi, the tax amnesty participant’s declared assets boosted the forex reserves to US$6 billion (Rp78.4 trillion) in two weeks.

Speaking at a dissemination event for the tax amnesty program at the Jakarta International Expo, yesterday, Jokowi said that other positive effects of the program are an increase in liquidity and the strengthening of the rupiah.

According to Bank Indonesia (BI), June’s forex reserves stood at US$109.8 billion, up from May’s US$103.6 billion. After the tax amnesty program was launched two weeks ago, the number of entrepreneurs who declared their assets reached 344 people with a property value of Rp3.7 trillion.

Jokowi predicted the peak period for asset declaration and repatriation will begin on the end of August until  early September. His prediction is based on the results of his conversation with businessmen, who generally asked for two to three weeks to calculate their asset.

The inflow of funds, Jokowi said, could be allocated to finance infrastructure projects. That way, the state budget can prioritize on public services such as village funds and the development of health and education facilities.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said that the tax amnesty program will not only boost forex reserves and the rupiah rate, but also provides benefits to the capital market. Liquidity is predicted to flood the Indonesian financial markets, “so, the returned money will have an important role to build economic foundations.” Sri said.
