TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo claimed that he will not be swayed with the considerably small numbers that have been declared and repatriated related to the tax amnesty program. Jokowi asserted that businesses will need some time to generate confidence before deciding to apply for the tax amnesty program.
“Businesses have not only one company. One businessman can own up to five companies, 10 companies, even a hundred. It takes time, not to mention the tie needed to go to a tax consultant,” Jokowi said during the tax amnesty socialization event on Monday, August 1, 2016.
The government has set a target to generate Rp 165 trillion in 2017 from the program. However, as of now, the number of repatriated funds is still far from the government’s expectation.
The President said that he had visited a number of small-medium enterprises and large corporations to deliver his predictions on when the Tax Amnesty Law will show results.
In an attempt to anticipate possible surge of tax declaration and fund repatriation, the President has requested the Directorate General of Tax to mobilize its best officials to help taxpayers with tax amnesty. “That is why last week I rounded up tax officers who can explain well, smile, and encourage people to see that paying taxes is for [the good] of the country,” Jokowi said.
